After watching the tape, strange things begin to happen around him, and he soon discovers that the tape's restless spirit has different plans in store for him. Despondent over the death of his own child, and believing that he is being guided by his rival's ghost, Andō decides to see the video for himself. Rumor has it that anyone who watches the video will die exactly one week later.

Andō soon learns of a mysterious cursed videotape, haunted by the spirit of a murdered young woman. After he finds a cryptic note in Takayama's stomach, Reiko and Yōichi also turn up dead. Sadako 3D, based on Koji Suzuki's 2012 follow-up novel S, and Sadako 3D 2 are sequels to Spiral.įollowing the events of Ring, the body of Ryūji Takayama, former husband of Reiko Asakawa and father of Yōichi Asakawa, is examined by his friend and rival, pathologist Mitsuo Andō. Takahashi and Nakata were later recruited to produce another sequel, Ring 2, which replaced Spiral as the sequel to Ring, not based on Suzuki's works, and thus ultimately ignores the story of Spiral. After their release, Ring became an enormous success while Spiral floundered, quickly becoming the 'forgotten sequel'. The two films shared a few cast members and had the same production team, but different directors and screenwriters Spiral was written and directed by Jōji Iida whereas Ring was written by Hiroshi Takahashi and directed by Hideo Nakata. The studio hoped this would increase revenues, because the Ring story was already a successful novel and television film. Ring and its sequel Spiral were released in Japan at the same time. It is titled The Spiral ( the Spiral) in English on the Japanese poster and video packaging and was previously released in the United States and Canada as Rasen (a transliteration of the Japanese title) and in the United Kingdom and Ireland as The Spiral.

It is directed by Jōji Iida and is based on the novel of the same title by Koji Suzuki.

Rasen is good, but it deserves to be presented in its own movie with new characters, rather than trying to fit the ideas into the Ringu storyline.Spiral (らせん, Rasen) is a 1998 Japanese film. The Japanese, on the other hand, like to rewrite the mythology with each succeeding sequel (I've seen this often in Japanese video games). In Western films, we like to define a universe in the first movie, and all sequels adopt to the rules laid down by the first film. For the first hour you will wonder where things are headed, and may even believe it is part of Ringu, but the last half hour reveals this is in fact a story about cloning, viruses, and world domination. The acting and cinematography is impressive in this film, as with the other Ringu movies. Many viewers probably felt the same reaction as when George Lucas decided to explain the Force with mitochlorians.

Ringu was all about a paranormal curse on a videotape, yet Rasen is about viruses and science. While this movie purports to be the sequel to Ringu, it seems to be part of a totally different universe.
